These air fryer sliced potatoes and onions turn out golden, crispy, and full of flavor with just a few simple ingredients.

I love making these air fryer sliced potatoes and onions when I need something quick and reliable. They turn out crispy on the edges, soft in the middle, and full of flavor from simple seasoning.

You only need a few basic ingredients, and far less oil than you would need if you were frying your potatoes. I often make this as an easy side for busy weeknights, and it pairs well with just about anything.

Prevent them from getting soggy, drying before air frying, soaking before cooking. par boiling - no need as this recipe is using sliced potatoes. I however like to slice and dip in cold water.

ingredients notes

  • 5 medium-sized russet potatoes - peeled and sliced.
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced.
  • melted butter
  • olive oil
  • salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste.
  • a handful of freshly cracked parsley to garnish, optional.

how to make them

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 200°C (400°F).
  2. Transfer the potatoes and onions to a bowl.
  3. Season with melted butter, olive oil, salt and pepper.
Sliced potatoes and onions coated in seasoning in a mixing bowl before air frying.
  1. Arrange the potatoes and onions in your air fryer basket without overcrowding.
  2. Air fryer for 15 minutes, shaking the basket from time to time until crispy.
  3. Serve.

adding the sliced potatoes to the air fryer basket

To prevent the potatoes from getting soggy, arrange the slices in a single layer in your air fryer basket.

Once you have seasoned the potatoes with salt, use a spatula or spoon to transfer them to the air fryer right away.

Seasoned potatoes will release water if left in the bowl for a while. If you are not cooking them immediately, use a spoon to transfer them, leaving the released water behind, as it can prevent the potatoes from turning crispy.

do I have to soak the potatoes?

I tested this recipe using both soaked and unsoaked potatoes. Because the potatoes are sliced so thin, this had no impact on how crispy they turned out.

I found what had the greatest impact on crispiness was ensuring I shake my basket every 5 minutes.

Also, if you dont shake your air fryer basket, the potatoes will only crispen up on one side, while staying soft on the other.

Ingredients

  • 5 medium-sized russet potatoes sliced evenly into ¼-inch (0.6 cm) rounds
  • 1 medium yellow onion sliced
  • 1-2 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley chopped, optional

Instructions

  • Preheat your air fryer to 200°C (400°F) for about 5 minutes.
  • Add the sliced potatoes and onion to a bowl. Add the melted butter, olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Toss until evenly coated.
  • Arrange the potatoes and onions in a single layer in the air fryer basket using a spoon or spatula, leaving any released liquid behind in the bowl. See notes below.
  • Air fry at 200°C (400°F) for 12-15 minutes, shaking the basket every 5 minutes, until the potatoes are tender, golden, and crisp around the edges.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley, if using, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Slice the potatoes evenly, about ¼ inch (0.6 cm) thick. A mandolin slicer works well for evenly cut slices.
  • Do not pour the potatoes directly from the bowl into the air fryer basket, as the released liquid can make them soggy. Use a spoon or spatula to transfer them instead.
