what is a spritz?

Now, before we even proceed, let's start with the basics! A spritz is a refreshing and effervescent cocktail that typically consists of three main components: a sparkling wine or Prosecco, a bitter or herbal liqueur, and a splash of soda water. The word spritz is derived from the German word spritzen, which simply means to splash.

The spritz is a popular aperitif (pre-dinner drink) that originated in Italy, specifically in the northeastern region of Veneto. The classic spritz recipe known as the Aperol Spritz, uses Aperol as the bitter liqueur.

However, there are variations that use other liqueurs like Campari or Select. The ratios can vary based on personal preference, but the most common one is the 3-2-1 spritz.

what is pink gin?

Now that we know what a spritz is? Let's now look at what pink gin is! For those who do not know, pink gin has been around since sometime back in the mid-19th century.

It is thought to have originated in the Royal Navy as a treatment for seasickness, but sailors added berries to make it more palatable.

It typically gets its pink color and flavor from red fruits like raspberries or strawberries. This spritz recipe skips the bitters and uses just a few ingredients, which will be revealed in the next section.

ingredients

Pink gin can be enjoyed in various ways. It is commonly used as a base for cocktails, such as the popular gin and tonic, or as an ingredient in other mixed drinks. And as you can well imagine, neat or on the rocks goes too!

  • Prosecco - but feel free to use other types of dry sparkling wine. Champagne, cava, or even non-alcoholic sparkling wine.
  • Pink gin - here, the brand doesn't matter so go for beefeater, Gordon's, or whichever brand you prefer.
  • soda water - this can be substituted for sparkling water. For some extra flavor and color, use pink soda water or grapefruit juice if you prefer your drink less sparkling!
  • raspberries - other types of berries such as strawberries, are also okay to use.

I personally enjoy serving this cocktail whenever I have any special gathering. So I am talking about Mother's Day, Easter, birthdays, graduations, baby showers, happy hour, and so on and so forth.

frequently asked questions

can i make my pink gin spritz ahead?

I do not recommend making it ahead, as the ice will just melt into the drink. If you have a scenario where you are planning a big party and would like to save time by preparing everything ahead, then I would say just measure out or set the individual ingredients aside so you have them ready. Because this cocktail is easy to prepare (no shaking), you can just pour out to individual glasses as needed.

what glass should I use?

A large wine glass, a balloon glass, or a highball glass is best for serving a Pink Gin Spritz. The choice of glassware will also depend on your personal preference so feel free to use what you like!

variations

  • Make your pink gin sweeter using raspberry syrup, adding a splash of raspberry juice or simply using sweet or semi-sweet sparkling wine instead of Prosecco.
  • Adjust the amount of alcohol to suit your preference. You can even make it alcohol-free by using alcohol-free gin and sparkling wine!
