There are so many reasons to love this blue spirulina smoothie bowl!
- It is creamy, delicious and packed with good fats from the coconut milk and the avocado!
- blue spirulina has a neutral taste, no smell, and will not make your smoothie bowl have an overbearing taste.
- it is made without banana - making it perfect for those keeping a count on their sugar intake or those who simply do not like bananas!
- spirulina has several health benefits and is packed with useful minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.
- this blue spirulina smoothie recipe is vegan, vegetarian, low-carb, paleo- and keto-friendly!
what is spirulina?
Spirulina is a microscopic and filamentous cyanobacterium (or blue-green algae) that has its name from the spiral or helical nature of its filaments. It has a long history of use as food, and it has been reported that it was already in use as food during the Aztec civilization (source).
It belongs to the group of superfoods such as matcha, hemp seeds, chia, and acai berry and is normally available for purchase in different forms; mostly in tablet, capsule, and powder form. It comes in two colors; blue or green and when used in food preparation, it tends to lend its blue or green color to the food being prepared.
The taste of Spirulina depends on the type used. Green spirulina has a strong fishy taste and slightly smells of the sea. For this reason, most people actually find the taste unpleasant. Therefore, it is best to mix it with fruit in recipes. Blue spirulina, on the other hand, is odorless and almost tasteless and goes undetectable when used in food preparation.
ingredients
You will require the following ingredients to make this smoothie bowl, which also goes by the popular name blue Majik):-
- plant-based milk - I like to use coconut milk because of its creamy taste but feel free to use any plant-based milk such as almond milk to keep it vegan, or regular milk if you are not on a dairy-free diet.
- avocado - frozen avocado helps create a creamy and thick consistency. It is also packed with protein and good fats, which helps keep you fuller for longer.
- frozen blueberries - rich in nutrients, packed with antioxidants and low in calories.
- blue spirulina powder - this is what gives the smoothie it's lovely blue colour.
- sweetener (optional) - feel free to stir in a tablespoon of your favourite sweetener, such as paleo-friendly honey. The sweetener is, however, totally optional. I like to skip it as my kids love smoothies and I am trying to teach them to enjoy the natural sweetness of fruit.
how to make a blue spirulina smoothie bowl
Blue smoothie bowls are absolutely easy to make. Here is how to go about it:-
- Add all the ingredients to a high-speed smoothie blender and process until smooth and creamy.
- Pour the smoothie into a bowl and top with your favourite toppings (chocolate nibs, chopped nuts, grated coconut, sliced fruit - just go ahead and use your creativity)! Serve and enjoy!
uses in the kitchen
There are several other ways to use spirulina at home or in your recipes.
- Use it to make tasty smoothies.
- Use it to make blue spirulina soap.
- Stir some into your batter to make pancakes.
- Add some to your chia pudding for a pop of color!
- Stir it into your yoghurt or quark.
- Use it as a natural food colour, for example, to make blue ice.
- Add a small amount to your salads.
useful tips and when to have it
- The recommended daily allowance lies at one teaspoon of spirulina powder, which equates to a small amount of about 3 grams per meal if you are to use the powder in three meals.
- this blue smoothie can be made ahead and kept in the fridge for one day. I do not advise keeping it longer than a day as it will not taste as fresh.
- have this blue spirulina smoothie for breakfast, as a post-workout snack or even as a creamy and healthy dessert! The time of the day you can have it doesn't really matter!
blue smoothie bowl variations
There are so many other ways to vary this mermaid blue smoothie bowl! Other healthy and yummy ingredients that you can add include:
- Make it tropical by using frozen tropical fruits such as frozen banana, mango, pineapple, and other types of frozen fruit.
- Add a tablespoon of protein powder (for keto) or collagen (for the whole 30 and paleo) diets.
- Stir in different seeds and ground nuts for an extra crunch; chia seeds, roasted peanuts or almonds, sesame or hemp seeds are a few examples.
- Make your blue spirulina smoothie bowl extra creamy by adding your favourite nut butter (such as peanut, cashew, or almond butter).
- Add some peanut butter or your favorite nut butter for a more creamy taste.
common questions related to this spirulina smoothie recipe
Yes, you can, by using blueberries. However, you will probably not attain the same blue color, as you would, when using blue spirulina powder.
Spirulina, which is said to be the first protein source on earth, refers to nutritious blue-green algae that have several health benefits! Some of these benefits include:-
- It is rich in vitamins and minerals. It is also high in protein, a teaspoon has an entire 4g of protein!
- It has powerful antioxidants which help prevent and reduce cell damage (the powerful antioxidant phycocyanin which is also highly anti-inflammatory is what gives blue spirulina that bright blue color).
- Spirulina has been used to treat allergies, including allergic rhinitis.
- It has also been shown to contain compounds that help treat or prevent medical conditions such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and cancer.
- It is also highly bioavailable, meaning our bodies absorb about 97% of what we ingest, compared to 5-25% bioavailability in most supplements.
You can read more about the health benefits of spirulina here.
When buying spirulina, make sure to purchase high-quality algae from organic sources, which are from clean and controlled waters and from certified producers. Spirulina is available to buy over the counter or online at:
- drugstores
- health food stores
- some grocery stores
- huge online shops which have drugstores, such as Amazon.
Blue Spirulina is relatively costly, in comparison to the green variety. 1.76 ounces cost about 30 dollars (at least it did in 2021). Here in Germany, you will pay about 12 euros (approximately 14 dollars) for 30 grams (1.06 ounces). Having said this, you only need a small amount for your recipes, which makes it totally worth it.
