air fryer sweet potato chunks - reasons to love!

    • flavored with salt, pepper, and honey, these sweet potato cubes are crispy, sweet, and delicious!
    • this recipe is perfect to serve for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even as a healthy snack!
    • it is easy and quick to make - you only need 14 minutes of air fryer roasting time from start to finish!

    ingredients

Here is a snapshot of what you will need to make air-fried sweet potato cubes. As always, you will find the full measurements on the recipe card provided below.

A picture of the ingredients needed to make this recipe
    • 3- 4 medium-sized sweet potatoes - choose firm sweet potatoes and avoid the ones that look dehydrated and dried out.
    • extra-virgin olive oil - or your favorite cooking oil.
    • salt and some freshly ground black pepper.
    • honey or some maple syrup (optional).

how to make Ninja Foodi Air Fryer Sweet Potato Cubes

Here is how to make sweet potato chunks using your Ninja Foodi, or any air fryer.

A picture of peeled sweet potatoes.

Clean and scrub the sweet potatoes under running water then peel them (you can leave the skin on if you prefer).

A picture showing how to cube sweet potatoes.

Trim off the ends. Cut the sweet potato into 1-inch disks, and then into smaller cubes, approximately 1 inch in size.

Transfer the cubed sweet potato to a large bowl. Add the olive oil, salt, and black pepper and ensure everything is well coated then air fry.

Once cooked through, transfer the sweet potato cubes to a serving bowl or plate, drizzle with honey (if using), and serve!

Tip: Check for doneness by using a fork to press one cube of sweet potato on a plate. It should easily smush if cooked. Once cooked, serve immediately as sweet potatoes tend to soften up with time.

can I use other air fryers?

While I used my Ninja Foodi 8 Quart Multicooker (affiliate link), you can still use this recipe using your favorite air fryers!

how long should I cook sweet potatoes in the air fryer?

Wondering how long to cook sweet potatoes in the air fryer? Depending on how big or small they are cut, and cooking at a temperature of 390°F, sweet potato cubes will take 13-15 minutes to cook. To ensure that the cubes cook evenly, make sure to shake the basket halfway through cooking. Depending on their size, whole sweet potatoes will require 35-45 minutes to cook, and again, make sure to check halfway through air frying.

    serving suggestions

Sweet potatoes are so versatile! Probably one of the reasons why we love them so much!

    • Serve for breakfast with some Ninja Foodi Air fryer Scrambled Eggs or Air fryer Breakfast Sausage links!
    • Use to make casserole dishes such as quiches and frittattas.
    • Serve them in salad bowls.
    • Use leftover sweet potato cubes to make stews and soups.
    • Stuff the cubes in burritos.

    variations

There are so many ways to make sweet potatoes using the air fryer, so as always, feel free to experiment in your kitchen.

    • Elevate the flavors by cooking them using some French fries seasoning (chips spice)!
    • Leave out the oil to make air fryer sweet potato chips with no oil. They still turn out tender, crispy, and delicious!
    • Make them spicy - coat with chili pepper flakes or cayenne pepper before cooking!
    • For extra sweetness - use some brown sugar or some maple syrup which also happens to be paleo-friendly!
    • For the perfect taste of fall (autumn) - coat with a teaspoon of cinnamon or pumpkin spice!
    • Use your favorite herbs! Thyme, sage, and rosemary pair up well as ingredients with sweet potato.

    storing leftover sweet potato cubes

Transfer leftovers to an airtight container or wrap tightly with foil and transfer to the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months (just bear in mind that the sweet potatoes may not taste the same once thawed).

Reheat cold sweet potatoes in the air fryer for 4-5 minutes at 390°F. You can also reheat the cubes by laying them flat in a parchment paper-lined baking tray and warming them in the oven for 4-6 minutes, or reheating them in the microwave at 600 watts for 3-4 minutes.

    useful tips

Here are a few useful tips that will help you make the best air fryer sweet potato cubes using your Ninja Foodi or favorite air fryer!

    • Whether you choose to peel or not to peel is totally up to you; your sweet potatoes will taste great either way.
    • Cube your sweet potato as regularly as possible to ensure the chunks cook evenly.
    • Check midway cooking and shake your air fryer basket a few times to prevent burning. If using the Ninja Foodi Multicooker, use a spatula or wooden spoon to carefully turn.
    • Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket to prevent the sweet potatoes from turning too soft. You may need to cook the sweet potato cubes in batches, depending on how big or small your basket is.

    frequently asked questions

What are the best sweet potatoes to use for roasting or air frying?

The red or orange varieties, which are known as “moist” varieties are best for air frying. They contain more of the enzyme amylase which breaks down starches into sugars. This makes them taste sweeter and results in less starch to absorb moisture, giving the sweet potatoes a creamier texture and taste. Avoid the purple and tan varieties, which have less moisture content and are for this reason known as the dryer variety.

Do I need to preheat my air fryer?

No, you do not need to preheat your air fryer. I have made these air fryer sweet potato chunks with and without preheating my air fryer and they turned out delicious each time. Also, like the Ninja Foodi, most air fryers allow you to cook without air frying nowadays. As always, make sure to read the instructions that come with your air fryer and add a few more preheating minutes to the cooking time, if your air fryer calls for it.
