reasons to love

  • crunchy, golden, and delicious toast that is perfect for breakfast or brunch.
  • cleaning the air fryer basket is much easier than trying to get all the breadcrumbs from your toaster.
  • using your air fryer to make toast gives you the opportunity to load the bread with your favorite toppings before air frying, such as garlic, cheese, or to dredge in egg, which is not possible when using a conventional toaster!

what types of bread can I toast with the air fryer?

Ideally, you want to avoid tender or soft bread, such as brioche because these do not take up high heat. Other than this, you can use any type of bread you prefer. White bread, challah, sourdough, ciabatta, baguettes split lengthwise are just a few examples of bread types you can use.

ingredients

A printable recipe card has been provided at the bottom of this page.

A picture of the ingredients needed to make this recipe.
  • bread - I used gluten-free bread for this recipe but feel free to use any type of bread suitable for toasting. Paleo, keto, and gluten-free bread will work too!
  • soft butter or margarine - this results in a crispier toast.

how to make air fryer toast

As you will see, this is a very easy and quick recipe, so let's go!!

  • Spread the butter on one side of each piece of bread.
A photo collage showing the ingredients for this recipe and how to butter the toast bread.
  • Next, arrange the bread on the air fryer basket, with the buttered side facing down. If you prefer, you can line the basket with aluminum foil (read here how to use tin foil properly, in your air fryer).
  • Air fry for four minutes, flip, and air fry for a further 3 minutes (the time will depend on how you prefer your toast and how thick or thin they are sliced. See recipe notes below). Once the time is over, remove the basket from the air fryer.

  • Serve and enjoy warm with your favorite toppings and spreads!

toppings and serving suggestions

When it comes to serving toast, there is certainly no right or wrong method, so you do you! Some of my favorite toppings for my toasted bread include jam or marmalades, sliced avocado, a drizzle of honey, hummus, butter, scrambled eggs, just to mention a few!

how to store toasted bread

  • If you intend to eat the bread within a short period of time, leave the toast inside your air fryer under the keep warm setting if it has one. Alternatively, place the toast on top of an oven rack and set the oven to the lowest temperature. Store the toasted bread like this for up to 20 minutes.
  • If eating within 30 minutes to one day, keep it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
  • For sandwiches made using toasted bread, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one day or on the countertop for a few hours (this will however depend on the type of filling your sandwiches have, as some filling may contaminate when left on the countertop).

useful tips

  • you do not need to preheat or grease your air fryer.
  • use soft butter or margarine, as this spreads easier.
  • air fryers work differently and cooking times may as a result differ. Air fry the bread for four minutes for a light crunch, and for 8 minutes (flipping halfway through), if you prefer your toast browner and crunchier.
  • also, it is ok to add or reduce one or two extra minutes to the cooking time, depending on how thick or thin the bread is sliced, or depending on how dark or crunchy you prefer your toast. Feel free to check on the bread halfway through cooking, and adjust the time accordingly.

common questions

how long should I toast bread in an air fry.

The time it takes to toast bread in an air fryer will depend on how thick the bread is sliced, the desired crispiness, and the type of air fryer. As a general rule, cooked at a temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204.4 degrees Celsius), toast bread will take 4-8 minutes to cook. Check on the bread halfway through cooking, and feel free to adjust the time accordingly.

This confirms that I no longer have any use for my toaster and can save counter space with only one appliance. My bread came out PERFECTLY toasted without having to check it halfway through. Will be making toast like this from now on.
