what is spirulina?
Spirulina is a microscopic and filamentous cyanobacterium (or blue-green algae) that has its name from the spiral or helical nature of its filaments.
It has a long history of use, and it has been reported that it was already in use as food during the Aztec civilization. It belongs to the group of superfoods such as matcha, hemp seeds, chia, and acai berry and is normally available for purchase in different forms; mostly in tablet, capsule, and powder form.
Spirulina comes in two colors; blue or green and when used in food preparation, it tends to lend its blue or green color to the food being prepared.
The taste of Spirulina depends on the type used. Green spirulina has a strong fishy taste and slightly smells of the sea. For this reason, most people actually find the taste unpleasant. Therefore, it is best to mix it with fruit in recipes.
Blue spirulina, on the other hand, is odorless and almost tasteless and goes undetectable when used in food preparation.

- plant-based milk - I like to use coconut milk because of its creamy taste but feel free to use any plant-based milk such as almond milk to keep it vegan, or regular milk if you are not on a dairy-free diet.
- avocado - frozen avocado helps create a creamy and thick consistency. It is also packed with protein and good fats, which helps keep you fuller for longer.
- frozen blueberries - rich in nutrients, packed with antioxidants, and low in calories.
- blue spirulina powder - this is what gives the smoothie it's lovely blue colour.
- sweetener (optional) - feel free to stir in a tablespoon of your favourite sweetener, such as regular sugar or paleo-friendly honey.

- Add all the ingredients to a high-speed smoothie blender and process until smooth and creamy.

Blue Spirulina is relatively costly, in comparison to the green variety. 1.76 ounces cost about 30 dollars (at least it did in 2021). Here in Germany, you will pay about 12 euros (approximately 14 dollars) for 30 grams (1.06 ounces). Having said this, you only need a small amount for your recipes, which makes it totally worth it.
