ingredients

This segment explains the best ingredients for making air fryer cinnamon toast and possible options for substitution. For measurements and the full step-by-step instructions, see the recipe card provided at the bottom of this page.

Ingredients needed to make air fryer french cinnamon toast.
  • bread: any sandwich bread that is soft but sturdy, and can soak up the egg and milk mixture will work well here. Also, slightly stale bread is better than a freshly baked one, as it stays put once coated, and does not fall apart easily. For extra richness and sweetness, use brioche bread.
  • medium-sized eggs.
  • milk - you can use any milk with the exception of thin skimmed milk for this recipe.
  • seasoning - vanilla extract, milk, and some salt to taste.

chef's tips

  • To prevent pieces of egg white from showing up on your browned toast slices, make sure to whisk the custard until the dairy, eggs, and seasoning are well combined.
  • For easier clean-up, use suitable parchment paper to line your air fryer basket. Additionally, use a plate or a bowl large enough for you to make the custard as well as soak the bread in.
  • Allow any excess custard to drip off as much as possible, before air frying.
  • French toast is traditionally served sweet but you can also ditch the sugar and pair this up with savory toppings instead, such as cheese and spinach.

frequently asked questions

How do I prevent my air fryer French toast from turning soggy?

French toast will turn out soggy if you soak it in too much custard, use too thin a slice of bread, or soak the bread for too long. Also, avoid air frying at too high a heat, as this will overcook the edges of the bread and leave the middle part uncooked.

How long does it take to cook French toast in the air fryer?

Between 6 and 8 minutes at 392°F (200°C) is great for a crunchy bite. If you prefer a very light and fluffy bite, air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 6-7 minutes. Seeing that different air fryers cook differently, always check mid-cooking and adjust the time accordingly.

Can you reheat French toast in an air fryer?

Yes, you can heat up your French toast in an air fryer. Simply reheat at 392°F (200°C) for 2-4 minutes, or until warmed through. Flip mid-cooking to ensure both sides are well reheated.

  • Lift each slice to drain as much of the custard as possible into the bowl, then place the slices into your air fryer basket. Program the time to 8 minutes, then air fry for 5 minutes. Flip and air fry the other side of the bread for the remaining three minutes or until the surface is golden brown, and the toast is cooked evenly.

Equipment: I made this recipe using the Ninja Foodi Max Multi-cooker but you can also use other types of air fryers. In this regard, bear in mind that cooking times will vary, depending on the type and size of the air fryer being used.  Keep an eye on your cinnamon French toast and adjust the cooking time as needed for your specific air fryer. Also, note that thickly sliced bread will require longer to cook.

    5 stars
Made a single serving this morning to give it a try in my Ninja Dual Zone. I halved all the ingredients and used our regular Country Harvest sliced bread. I used air fry at 390° for 8 minutes, flipping half way through. I'm not a huge French toast fan, but this was soooo good!!!!! I am sold and will be making it again tomorrow for myself and hubby. Thank you!!
