Are Hazelnuts Keto?

Hazelnuts have numerous health benefits which include:

  • Great source of healthy fats: they are a great source of monosaturated and polyunsaturated fats, both beneficial in lowering harmful blood cholesterol levels.
  • High in fiber: A handful of hazelnuts makes up for 4 percent of the required daily value (DV).
  • Great source of vitamins: Hazelnuts are loaded with vitamins B, C, E, and K.

According to the USDA, 100 grams of Hazelnuts have approximately 16,7 g carbs and a total of 9,7 g dietary fiber. This means just 7 grams of net carbs per 100 grams of nuts (approximately 70 hazelnuts) so most certainly Keto!!

Hazelnuts are also rich in protein; 100 grams supplies about 14,95 grams of protein. Source: USDA Database

Ingredients

  • 75 g hazelnuts
  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • ¼ cup almond butter (or peanut butter)
  • ¼ cup raw cacao powder
  • 15 g ground golden flax seeds
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup sweetener of choice such as swerve or monk fruit sweetener
  • ¼ tsp pink himalayan salt

How to make

When I made these low-carb hazelnut energy treats, I didn’t have the suitable molds to make energy bars, so I used my silicon tart mold. Feel free to spread it on a baking tray and use it as a chocolate bark. The recipe can easily be converted to be paleo-friendly by using a suitable paleo-sweetener of choice, such as coconut sugar. It is also totally vegan!

  • Roast the hazelnuts slightly under medium heat to release their oils and make them more flavourful. Ground them coarsely using a food processor or a pestle and mortar, then set them aside to cool.
  • Meanwhile, mix all the other dry ingredients (swerve or your preferred choice of sweetener, ground golden flax-seeds, cacao powder and the pink Himalayan salt.
  • Melt the coconut oil and nut butter, stirring continuously until properly mixed with no chunks.
  • Gently mix the dry ingredients into the melted coconut-almond or peanut butter mixture.
  • Pour into a suitable silicon mold and freeze for at least one hour. Alternatively, spread the mixture on a parchment paper lined dish.
  • Once frozen, remove from the mold and store in an air-tight container in the freezer. If you used the lined dish, break it into desired pieces then store in it the fridge.
